FLAMENCO FUSION WORKSHOP

Dates: Saturday-Sunday, February 15 -16 , 2020

Times: Sat. 3-5pm and Sun. 9-11am

Cost:

$40 flat fee before Jan. 31st

$50 after Jan. 31st

This two-day workshop will use basic movements of Flamenco as the foundation to teach participants how to incorporate elements of self-expression into this particular style of dance.  Techniques from other dance forms will also be used. This workshop is open to non-dancers, beginners, and experienced dancers of all styles.

Please note this is not focused on learning strictly traditional Flamenco!  Rather, the instructor aims to work with students to use Flamenco as a form of self-expression and teach them body awareness so they understand how to use their own strengths and weaknesses to create their own style.

The culture of Flamenco will be weaved into the workshop through video and discussion about its history and contemporary role in modern Spain as well as its influence on other dance styles throughout the world.

The workshop will culminate with a short performance on Sunday, immediately after the workshop. Participation in the the performance is optional.

Instructor Background:

Ana Evans is originally from Bulgaria and grew up dancing ballet and involved in theatre. As an adult she traveled throughout Europe and spent several years in Spain learning traditional Flamenco, eventually choreographing for different dance companies and individuals. She eventually had the opportunity to work with women in prison teaching them Flamenco and dance as a form of therapy and meditation. Three years ago she published a book on this experience, focusing on the power of dance as a therapeutic element in healing and recovery from traumatic experiences.

Shortly after she published this book, she moved to El Paso and has worked with UTEP and other local dance studios to bring her style of dance to the southwest. She continues to travel to Europe to continue her own learning.
